My mother is the direct descendant of peasant farmers. Her mother did not marry until she was 31 years old. She was helping her father manage the family farm near Muskegon, Michigan. My paternal grandfather emigrated to the US from Norway as a two year old. He was one of 11 children. He fought as an American in World War I. He never spoke of his service. He died when I was 3. My uncle visited the library of congress and found no records of either of my grandparents births.
My father’s lineage is a bit more certain. His parents and grandparents were of English descent. Solid working class folks. My great grandmother was a seamstress. I know they all came from the area around Birmingham, in England.
Does this make me an American?
